So I assume that A LOT of you out there cannot and will not function in the mornings without that cup of coffee! With more research out there demonstrating its benefits, I just thought I would highlight the pros and cons of coffee since it is probably a drink very few will give up that easily!
The beneficial properties of coffee that have been shown in studies is largely due to the phytonutrients found in coffee beans. Just to help you remember, phytonutrients/phytochemicals are the naturally occurring chemicals found in most plant based foods. The antioxidant properties of phytonutrients help them promote health. Now you need to keep in mind that the antioxidant content differs from cup to cup depending on the type of bean used, brewing method and the amount of coffee used.
Coffee has been linked to reducing the risk of type 2 Diabetes, as well as colon cancer and Parkinson’s Disease. More studies are needed to investigate the exact biological mechanisms that are responsible for these health benefits. In terms of quantity, benefits are shown with 2-3 cups of coffee per day. Exceeding an intake of 5 -6 causes you to throw these benefits out the window! Choosing decaffeinated coffee can also provide the same benefit; just like I’ve mentioned, it is the antioxidants found in coffee that promote health. And not the other one…Caffeine..
Caffeine is believed to cause an increase in blood pressure. Although this increase is only temporary, repeated elevations in blood pressure could increase a person’s risk of heart disease. More evidence is needed to investigate that. Furthermore, caffeine is a diuretic (i.e. makes you urinate more) which can lead to an increase in fluid loss from your body. Caffeine is also a stimulant drug, where large amounts can make people anxious or cause headaches.
So my take on coffee – If you have six, cut down to 3! If you are not a coffee drinker, there is no reason for you to start (the occasional one is ok) and if you have the 1 or 2 cups of coffee, then ENJOY….
