Everyone is Talking Food Trends

Food trendWith the start of a new year, comes the gossip and talk about food trends. Health gurus, food manufacturers, and restaurant consultants have been raving about what to expect in 2014  from what foods are “in”, the “hot” culinary styles and cuisines to “it” diets. So what are we looking at for 2014? Here’s a list of what is currently trending in the food world…

Cauliflower: This cruciferous vegetable appears to be the new “kale” of 2014. Cauliflower hasn’t had much hype in the food world as opposed to its counterpart, broccoli. However, this vegetable is packed with nutrients such as fibre, vitamin C, vitamin K and folate. Cauliflower florets can be served as a side dish, baked with any spice of choice! cauliflower

Gluten-free/Wheat-free diets: Many consumers are still hyped about gluten free diets or eliminating wheat completely from their diet, even though the evidence is lacking to support such diets for weight loss or health (unless associated with a disease or clinical illness). Such diets do offer some relief from those suffering from food intolerances or IBS, however, avoiding gluten for weight loss has not been supported. Diets such as the Paleo diet or “Wheat Belly” are on top of the list for 2014.

Fermented Foods: Foods such as Kefir, Miso,  Kombucha, Sauerkraut and  Kimchi will be hot in 2014 due to their perceived role as functional foods and in promoting gut health. It’s all about good gut bacteria this year and the importance of boosting your gut immunity!

freekehFreekeh: Known as the new Supergrain, freekeh is wheat, which has been harvested early – when it’s still young and green and then gets roasted. It is packed with fibre, rich in protein and other nutrients such as selenium, potassium and magnesium. Freekeh is also considered a Low GI food, making it a good choice for people with Diabetes or those trying to lose weight (i.e. fills you up for a longer period of time!).

Kale: 2013 has proved to be the year of Kale and I don’t see it dropping off the list anytime soon. Kale is a great source of vitamins A,C and K as well as other nutrients such as calcium, potassium and iron. Kale chips have been the “it” snack for a while, hence people trying to lose weight or those who are simply on a health kick will not be bidding farewell to this popular snack. kale

Other popular trends include:

  • Greek yoghurt
  • Middle eastern food
  • Rabbit
  • Non GMO
  • Brazilian, Mexican and High-end Asian cuisines
  • Tea
  • Craft Sodas
  • Sumac
  • Artichokes
  • Healthy fast food

2014 is definitely a year to look our for with the rise of more “superfoods”, 3D- printing, digital dining and “smart” cutlery. So watch this space!

  2. Rabbit p really? I suppose lean and full of protein? Environmentally correct???

    • Rabbit is in indeed lean and a good source of protein and is known to be a sustainable source of protein with a relatively small environmental footprint! However, personally, I cannot get over the “cuteness” factor so Rabbit won’t be on my dinner table anytime soon! 🙂
